Cute Cookies:
Odette and Alise are baking these cookies for Valentine's Day. They plan to put them in a basket tied with pink and red ribbons and give them to Derek and Lucas as a surprise.
These cookies are delicious and not just for Valentine's Day! You can enjoy them all year round - just ask JeanBob...he's quick to offer his tasting services when there is baking to be done!
Ingredients:
• 300g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
• 120g golden caster sugar
• 200g salted butter, diced
• 2 large egg yolks
• 2 tsp vanilla extract
• ½ tsp rosewater (or you can use 25g freeze-dried raspberries, whizzed into a powder)
• Pink/Red food coloring
Method:
1. Firstly, add your flour and butter to a food processor and whizz together until fine crumbs form.
2. Now add the the egg yolks and sugar and continue to use the food processor until the mixture becomes a smooth dough.
3. Remove approximately one third of the dough and put it to one side, leave the rest of the dough in the food processor.
4. Add the vanilla to the dough still in the food processor and pulse to incorporate the vanilla.
5. Wrap the vanilla dough into cling film and leave to one side.
6. Take the other batch of dough and place it in the food processor with the rosewater (or dried raspberries), along with a couple of drops of food coloring.
7. Pulse the dough to evenly distribute the color. Add more food coloring until you reach the desired color (add a couple of extra drops at a time and pulse in between each addition). If your dough seems too soft, add a couple of spoonfuls of flour until the dough is the same consistency as the vanilla dough that you made earlier.
8. Wrap the dough in cling film.
9. Place both batches of dough into the fridge for 30 minutes. Remove the dough from the fridge 30 minutes before you plan to roll it out.
10. When you remove the dough from the fridge, preheat the oven to 360F/180C/160C fan/gas 4.
11. Place the colored dough between baking parchment and thickly roll it out then take a small heart cutter (1-2in/3-4cm) and cut out the hearts. Make sure you keep bringing the dough back together and rolling it out again so that you use all of the dough.
12. Line the hearts on top of each other and gently press together (try and keep the heart shape as much as possible.
13. Wrap the heart "tube" in cling film (careful to keep the shape as you do so) and freeze for approx. 3 hours until solid.
14. When the heart shaped dough has hardened, remove it from the freezer and place to one side.
15. Use your hands to roll the vanilla dough into 3 cylinders (they should be the length of your heart tube).
16. Press each cylinder to one "side" of your heart (not the ends). Pat the sides to gently cover the colored dough then carefully roll the dough on your work surface until your colored dough is covered.
17. Chill for approx. 2 hours.
18. Line your baking trays with baking parchment.
19. Remove the dough from the fridge and carefully slice the "tube" into "discs" that are approx one third inch (1cm) thick.
20. Place the cookies on the tray (make sure to leave space in between each one as they will spread as they bake).
21. Bake for 20 minutes.
22. Allow the cookies to cool on wire racks.
Lovely Ladybird Letters
Deliver your notes of affection in a most unique way this Valentine's Day with our lovely ladybird letters.
These ladybirds can be used for sweet messages or as tags for presents and you can use them for all kinds of occasions, not just Valentine's Day!
Why not try doing similar things with other animals too? Perhaps you could take inspiration from Odette and make a swan design so that you lift a wing up to reveal a special message?
You Will Need:
Red Card
Black Card
Pen/Pencil (you could even use glitter pens or different colors)
Scissors
Glue
Method:
1. First draw a circle on the red card. Make sure it is big enough for your note.
2. Now draw another circle that is the same size as the first one.
3. Carefully cut out both of the circles.
4. Take one of your circles and cut it in half.
5. Glue the very top of each semi circle to the complete circle that you made earlier. It should look like the two circles are on top of each other.
6. When the glue has dried, you'll be able to gently lift up the wings/semi circles to reveal the full circle underneath.
7. Draw a circle on the black card that is smaller than the red circle that you made earlier.
8. Turn your red circles over so that the wings are facing down on the surface and glue your black circle to the top (the edge where you glued earlier). You should have approximately half the circle glued to the red piece with the other half hanging over the edge.
9. When the glue has dried, turn your card over and draw small black spots on the "wings".
10. Open the wings and add your message. You could also add a drawing or small photo.
Wonderful Watercolor Hearts
This craft is a great way to still make the most of the outdoors - make sure to wrap up warm if it is cold where you are!
Odette loves finding ways to add color to different things and these SWANderful hearts do just that! What makes them even more special is that no two hearts that you make will be the same! Just like people, they are all unique and special in their own way!
You could also add a special message or drawing to the hearts when they are dry for an added personal touch.
You Will Need:
Watercolor Paper
Acrylic Paint - Choose your favorite colors!
Scissors
Method:
1. Wait until it is raining a little (not too stormy or rainy) or wait until the day after a heavy rain when the grass is still wet.
2. Draw a heart on your watercolor paper.
3. Carefully cut the heart out.
3. Take your chosen colors (you can use different colors or different shades of the same color).
4. Lay your heart on the ground outside (remember to rest it on the grass if you are doing this after a storm so the wet grass soaks through).
5. Watch as you wait for the colors to blend together and form unique patterns and effects.
6. When you are happy with the effect/color spread, carefully pick up your heart and bring it inside to dry before displaying your design or gifting it to someone special.
Its Puffin's birthday in February!
That makes his zodiac sign an Aquarius and his birthstone the amethyst.
Aquarius are assertive and love to be the ones to make plans. They love evidence and facts; they are always looking for truth, justice, and fairness. They are analytical which makes them led more by their heads than their hearts.
Aquarius are not afraid to be themselves. They are unique and a bit eccentric. They always say what they think and can be very flowery when they speak. Their biggest dislikes are stick-in-the-mud type people who don't want to go along with their plans.
Amethyst is considered the most powerful and protective stone. It is used to have control of one's own thoughts and mindfulness and can also protect against fearful feelings.
We think this No Fear attitude sounds just like General Puffin!
