This year at The Swan Princess we have been working hard to move all of our inventory into a brand new warehouse! Preparations for this have included organizing all of our art cels and pencil sketches for easier transport and storage. As we have been sorting through the incredible animation museum that is our warehouse, we have found some really incredible and unique pieces of Swan Princess history that were just too swanderful to not share with our amazing fans! Therefore, we would like to proudly present our new series:

Awesome Things We Found in the Warehouse Today!

We love following the creative process of the animators as they designed each of the iconic characters. This month we're following the design process of Queen Uberta's nose! Her nose is arguably the most recognizable feature of her face and it went through many changes before it became the Uberta we know and love.

This is a rough sketch of Uberta from the planning of the scenes of "This is My Idea". You can see her her facial profile but the most fun part of this sketch is the other nose options the animator was practicing for her to the left of the image.

This layout sketch, also from the planning of "This is My Idea" shows Uberta with a completely different nose from the ones above along with different lips to match.

This is storyboard art that has Uberta sporting a longer, thicker nose with a smaller hairstyle and a more square chin.

We're getting closer! Here Uberta has all the facial features that made it into the final film- except her nose. It has the same basic shape but has more of a bump to the top lines.

Here they tried a much smaller nose and we think its funny that in this pose you can see straight up her nose!

And, finally, the nose and face that make up the beautiful final version of Queen Uberta from the film. Which of Queen Uberta's many noses is your favorite?

Its Puffin's birthday in February!
That makes his zodiac sign an Aquarius and his birthstone the amethyst.
Aquarius are assertive and love to be the ones to make plans. They love evidence and facts; they are always looking for truth, justice, and fairness. They are analytical which makes them led more by their heads than their hearts.
Aquarius are not afraid to be themselves. They are unique and a bit eccentric. They always say what they think and can be very flowery when they speak. Their biggest dislikes are stick-in-the-mud type people who don't want to go along with their plans.
Amethyst is considered the most powerful and protective stone. It is used to have control of one's own thoughts and mindfulness and can also protect against fearful feelings.
We think this No Fear attitude sounds just like General Puffin!

Question: How did director Richard Rich come up with the idea for an animated adaptation of The Swan Lake? I heard he first pitched the idea while he was working at Disney, but got turned down. Is that true? What year did that happen?
Answer: This answer comes directly from Richard Rich- "There was nothing in development at Disney during my time there.  Brian Nissen and I wanted to do a fairytale and searched for one and our search led us to the fairytale the ballet was based on.  We researched many versions and knew we needed to find an approach that would make this unique unto itself.  There are similarities and yet many new ideas that were not part of any version of the fairy tale help bring it to life and gave it a freshness that seems to have lasted through the years.  Of great delight has been to do our latest addition to the series, “A FairyTale is Born” the musical prequel to the original Swan Princess.  It will be released in the very near future by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment."

Dear Diary:

My search for more information about my mother has been pause for the moment, mostly because I was chosen to be Bridget and Chamberlain’s wedding planner! I feel greatly honored, not only am I her maid of honor but the one to plan her special day! I’m glad she trusts me with such a grand task. I’ve asked them both about locations first, but they weren’t too sure. Should it be close and be in Chamberg? Should it be at the castle at Swan Lake? Or would it be none and we sail away to a far away land for a destination wedding? After some talking, at the very least they wouldn’t want to sail away for it, but Chamberlain felt like if it was in Uberta’s kingdom, he would feel like he would still be at work. Leave it to Uberta to make the groom work for her on his big day. So it was decided we would have it be at Swan Lake! The castle is in disrepair and the garden is overgrown with no one having tended to it for so long, but I think this would be a great opportunity to start fixing it up! I have a lot of mixed feelings about being back at my prison, but I feel as though this would also be my opportunity to come to terms with it. Bridget was just as much of a prisoner of Rothbart as I was, and I think this could help us both heal as we continue in a new chapter in our life!
