Princess Odette and Prince Derek love celebrating holidays from around the world at Swan Lake. This year, they're celebrating American Independence Day on July 4th! Traditionally, this holiday is celebrated with fireworks, parades, and red, white, and blue decorations. Swan Lake is experiencing a heat wave like most countries right now, so they've decided to celebrate by donating food to their local animal shelter instead of lighting fireworks. Here's some other great ideas from Lord Rogers for how to celebrate below!

Fourth of July Trifle


Celebrate Independence Day with this fruity trifle. Featuring the American colors, this desert is filled with flavor, great for parties and a refreshing treat to enjoy during the sunny weather!
Princess Odette loves to serve this at parties in the castle and normally presents it in a beautiful glass bowl - one of her favorite pieces of glassware is decorated with the outlines of graceful swans and delicate flowers!

Ingredients:
• 1½ loaves pound cake (store bought or box mix)
• 3 cups heavy cream
• 16 ounces cream cheese, softened
• 1 teaspoon lemon zest
• 1/2 cup white sugar
• ¼ cup whole milk
• 1 cup strawberries, sliced (plus extra to garnish)
• 1 cup blueberries (plus extra to garnish)
• 1 cup raspberries (plush extra to garnish)

Special Equipment:
• Trifle Bowl/Large Glass Bowl

Instructions:
1. Cut the pound cake into 1” cubes (they don't have to be neat/equal).

2. In a bowl, whip the heavy cream using an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.

3. Use another larger bowl to beat together the cream cheese, lemon zest and sugar.

4. Add the milk to the cream cheese mix and stir well.

5. Fold the whipped cream so that mixture is thick but spreadable.

6. In the bottom of your trifle dish, add a layer of cake cubes to cover the base and then add one more layer of cake cubes.

7. Add half of the strawberries and level them out so they cover the cake layer.

8. Add half of the blueberries to make the next layer.

9. Add half of the raspberries to make another layer.

10. Now top the layers with half of the whipped cream mix.

11. Repeat the layers in the same order (cake, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries).

12. Sprinkle the trifle with some extra berries and serve!

No Bake Smores Cake


Smores are a scrumptious treat, especially around a campfire! If you love smores then this no bake cake is a great desert to try and it's really easy to make too!
This desert should be served as soon as it comes out of the refrigerator.

Ingredients:
• 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
• 1 cup marshmallow creme
• 16 graham crackers (from one 14.4-oz. box)
• 2 cups prepared chocolate pudding
• 1/2 cups mini marshmallows 
• Melted dark chocolate for drizzling, (optional)

Special Equipment:
9x5 inch loaf pan

Instructions:
1. Using an electric mixer on high speed, beat the cream until stiff peaks form.

2. Fold the marshmallow creme into the whipped cream.

3. Line the loaf pan with plastic wrap.

4. Add a layer of graham crackers to the bottom of the tin (you should need about 4 crackers and you may need to break them up and overlap a little so that it makes a nice layer on the base).

5. Add 1 cup of pudding to the pan and spread into even layer.

6. Top the pudding in the pan with another layer of graham crackers.

7. Next, use 1/3 of the cream mixture and spread evenly to make another layer.

8. Repeat the layer process, with the last layer being graham crackers.

9. Transfer the remaining 1/3 of cream mixture to another bowl.

10. Cover the cake and leftover cream with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

11. When you are ready to serve the cake. Remove the plastic wrap and turn the cake out onto the platter.

12. Top with leftover cream.

Extra Sweet Treat!


Marshmallows are one of Princess Odette's favorite snacks! If you enjoy a marshmallow treat too, why not add extra to this cake - place some marshmallows on a baking sheet lined with foil and broil for 30 seconds until golden brown then scatter them all over the cake!

Alise adds another favorite to this tasty desert when she helps in the kitchen - chocolate! All you have to do is boil water in a pan and place a bowl of your favorite chocolate on the top (make sure the bottom of the bowl isn't touching the water). Wait for the chocolate to finish melting then drizzle as much as you like over the cake just before serving!
You can also allow the chocolate to cool for a couple of minutes and add it just before refrigerating the cake.

Fourth of July Floral Fun


Rogers enjoys explaining the science behind this colorful craft and it also happens to be one of Alise's favorite summer activities!
For this activity, you can use red and blue for a patriotic feel but if, like Odette, you love different colors, you can use pink, purple, green...whatever colors you like!

You Will Need:
• White daisies/chrysanthemums
• Red and blue food coloring (or liquid watercolor paint)
• 2 or more Mason jars/cups
• Chopping Board
• Knife

Instructions:
1. Pour an inch or two of water into each jar/cup.

2. Add red food coloring (or liquid watercolors) to one jar and blue to the other.  Make sure you add a generous amount of color to each jar (If using food coloring, you won't need to add as much compared to using watercolors).

3. Pick your flowers from your garden or a neighbors (make sure to ask permission first) or purchase some at a store.

4. Using a sharp knife, slice the stem in half lengthwise. Make sure to leave between 1 and 2 inches of solid stem between the cut and the flower. Ask an adult if you need help.

5. Place the flower in the cups of colored water, with one stem in the red jar and one stem in the blue jar, making sure that the stems are submerged in the water. You may want to do one flower at a time and keep adding color/water to the jars each time.

6. The flowers will slowly start changing color, the longer you leave them in the dye, the more pigmented they will become.

7. Present your beautiful patriotic flowers as part of your 4th July celebrations!
