This month our monthly recipe and activity are one and the same! As September rolls in, it brings excitement for autumn to the castle. Odette and Derek love the beautiful colors and rich scents of fall. Here's how to make your home smell like autumn time at Swan Lake.

Fall Simmer Pot

Ingredients:

1 Orange Peel (the orange inside makes a great healthy snack for while you are  cooking!)

2-4 Cinnamon Sticks

1 Teaspoon Vanilla

1 Teaspoon Whole Cloves

Add all ingredients to a saucepan. Pour just enough water to cover all of the ingredients into the pan. It should be about one inch of water.

Simmer the mixture on low heat and enjoy the amazing smells of fall!

Be sure to monitor the pan for safety. This mixture can be heated for two-hour intervals over the course of about 3 days before the scent wears out.

Did You Know?

Princesses Odette and Alise love going apple picking in the fall. There are such beautiful apple orchards around the castle. Apples often make us think of fall and education, but what do apples have to do with teachers?

In the 1700s, in Sweden and Denmark less fortunate families gave teachers baskets of apples to pay the teachers for their work instead of money.

In the early days of the United States, in Western frontier villages, each town fed and housed their own schoolteacher. It was thought if they didn't need to worry about making money the teacher could better focus on the children's education. Apples were a popular delicacy to gift teachers during the onset of the Great Depression.

An apple is still a great gift for your favorite teacher or homeschooling parent in your life! Lord Rogers is one of our favorite teachers. Do you think he likes apples?
